Shortly after 8:45 p.m. on March 24, state police troopers on patrol stopped Newburgh resident Humperto Borges, Jr., 41, on the interstate for a vehicle and traffic violation. During the subsequent stop, police said troopers were given probable cause to search the vehicle and its occupants.
During the search of Borges and his passenger, 19-year-old Newburgh resident Danielys Melendez Ortiz, police said that troopers uncovered an estimated 65.8 grams of heroin, 4.7 grams of cocaine and 3.5 grams of synthetic marijuana, and the two were taken into custody.
Borges was charged with one count of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and two counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, all felonies. Melendez Ortiz was charged with a misdemeanor count of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Following arraignment, Borges was remanded to the Orange County Jail without bail. He is due in court to answer the charges on Thursday. Melendez Ortiz was released on her own recognizance and is due back in Tuxedo Justice Court on April 10.
